Physical security in the work environment
The title of this article "physical security in the work environment" could well be the title for a book on physical security so great is the scope of the subject. However, the specific area of physical security we will be examining is that of physical security for security personnel, specifically those involved in screening and access security posts.
Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the world has become increasingly security conscious and many organizations and facilities have begun to screen and examine all those wishing to enter a specific area.
Additionally, steps are taken to prevent illegal, malicious access. Despite advances in surveillance and screening technologies, the bottom line of any security system is the security personnel who daily put themselves in situations where their physical security is endangered.
Whether it is a security guard at a road barrier, security personnel at airports or security officers at an office building reception desk – they are all on the front line and deserve and demand measures to protect their physical security.
Physical security measures
When assessing which physical security measures to put in place to protect personnel, a number of factors need to be considered.
• Threat assessment: from where is the threat to physical security liable to come, what forms of threat are the most probable. For example, a car bomb demands one set of physical security measures whilst the threat of shooting or stabbing needs a different set of physical security protocols.
• Job restrictions and description: The job demands and descriptions of security personnel also determine the type of physical security measures you put in place. If security offices need to be mobile and unrestricted, then a static guard post or cumbersome body armor, whilst providing excellent physical security may cause them to perform their job function poorly.
• Physical characteristics of the site: physical characteristics of the site can also play a role in determining physical security measures. Flat, open spaces demand a different physical security setup that that of a building or industrial complex.
• Budget: unfortunately, budgetary considerations are often at the top of the list when it comes to physical security measures. Remember, that your people are your most valuable asset!
Consult a physical security expert
It is an excellent idea to consult an expert in the field of security and physical security. Companies specializing in this field often employ ex-military or security officers who bring with them a vast field of knowledge and experience. physical security consultants also have access to the latest, most up to date information regarding potential threats and physical security technologies.
I've said it before and I'll say it again – your security personnel are your most important asset, they are what stand between you and a potential disaster. They deserve the best physical security you can give them!
